Editor’s letter for
PIXELS MAGAZINE
To mould is to release oneself from the constraints that evade a definite shape, yet it also entails addition rather than simply release—a process of creation. Sometimes, conformity and identity formation may seem confining. Perhaps they are, despite the fact that moulding is inherent in creation. Realisation and identification occur only with an awareness of time.
Every mould, recreation, or term one might choose takes place in the present, fragments merged to narrate a complete story. But what if we view these fragmented, disoriented pieces as the full story? It's clear we don't know our destination, or if there even is one. Sometimes, the act of action is all there is—a dissolution into a fusion dance where boundaries morph into entrances of a realm where fission becomes the dissolving agent through which we learn to separate and shed the layers of our being, embracing the act of action.
This letter is for you to unveil. You, as a Being, represented through cultures, forced into migration and stepping into a limbo where past and present no longer connect, compelling you to recreate yourself in hybrid forms, seeking more while also looking back to trace the blurred trails. I hope you find comfort within these pages, allowing your voice to resonate with vitality. Similar to the voices represented in this first issue, where stories of transcultural individuals, including ourselves as editors, enable deep resonance, exploration, and progression to flourish fully.
Stages of migration and integration involve the experience of being displaced, beginning anew, and navigating multiple cultures without fully belonging to any one of them. It also encompasses the sudden ability to take charge of your life and recognizing your distinct blend of cultures as an asset.
However, we write these words knowing that the depth of this experience cannot be captured in these written lines. Each story is a story lived, felt, challenged, and still unfolding. Many of us are aware of the sacrifices made that led us to grapple with several cultures. For some, these sacrifices were made by previous generations, hoping to provide us with better opportunities. For others, the sacrifices are personal, made in the same spirit of hope.
Having to let go of everything sacred and familiar due to injustice, wars, lack of safety, or __________ (leaving the blank space for your resonance) cultivates a stream of challenges where the meaning of one's identity has to be continuously questioned and redefined in order to search for something we have yet to name or will never be able to. To be viewed as ’other’ is an invitation to create your own archival of experiences as you continue to grow, to always let your light shine through in its own distinct way. It's akin to birth when light breaks in, and everything is new and unfamiliar. That is why we perceive the fragments that enter as beauty—the tracks that open up, where rays illuminate and solace resides.
